Air Jordan 5s were first launched in 1990 and were designed to mimic a World War II fighter plane. The reflective elements of the shoe, most notably the tongue, are meant to bring a metallic quality to the design. A flamed midsole (shark teeth design) also gives the shoe an industrial feel. The AJ5 also introduced translucent outsoles. Mesh side panels and lace locks are a key part of this design, originated in the design of the previous Jordan iteration, the Jordan 4.
Jordan 5s typically incorporate mesh and plastic lace locks, but other materials may vary depending on the colorway. Newer Air Jordan 5s often feature nubuck, a type of sanded leather for a specific vintage feel. Nubuck is a unique material which was first introduced via Jordan 4s. Some colorways incorporate split-grain leather. Structured leather typically forms the upper.
